Statistical education

The Statistical Office in Szczecin has been actively engaged in statistical education for many years. Its main goal is to promote knowledge about official statistics, develop skills in using and analysing statistical data. Moreover, it is important to raise awareness, especially among young people, of the significant role that statistics play in the everyday life of each of us, as well as in the economy and social relations. 

 Main Tasks of Statistical Education
  • Promoting awareness of the organisation and activities of official statistics authorities.
  • Developing data analysis capabilities: fostering critical thinking and the correct interpretation of statistical indicators.
  • Promoting statistical information resources: demonstrating how to access and use Statistics Poland's databases independently and free of charge (e.g. the Local Data Bank, the Geostatistical Portal, experimental databases).
  • Supporting school and higher education: providing reliable statistical data for theses, research projects and educational activities.
Organization and Forms of Meetings

For users' convenience, meetings can be held online or either in the Statistical Office in Szczecin (also in its branches located in Koszalin and Stargard) or directly at the premises of requesting groups.

The duration, thematic scope, and training programmes are tailored to the age and needs of participants. Activities are also provided for groups with special needs. 

Main target Groups:

1. Preschool Children
During the meetings we present statistics through play and experience.

  • Workshops and themed lessons: children get to know more about statistician job and why statistics is important in everyday life (e.g., counting how many girls and boys are in a group, how many have siblings, and why such information matters for decision-making like meal planning). They also learn how simple charts are created (e.g., they create charts by choosing favourite fruits and vegetables) as well as what a statistical interviewer does.
  • Games and competitions: use of riddles, quizzes, and dedicated educational materials (e.g., reading stories about statistics).

2. Primary School Students
Classes are adapted to students’ age and skills.

  • In early education: methods based on active participation and learning through play.
  • In higher grades: pupils learn about the work of statisticians, how statistical surveys are conducted, and the importance of statistics in daily life, combining theory with workshop-based learning.

3. Secondary School Students
Education focuses on practical use of data in adult life and further study.

  • Students learn about the work of statisticians, how statistical surveys are conducted, and the importance of statistics in daily life, combining theory with workshop-based learning.
  • Lessons with databases: hands-on computer workshops where students learn how to find information about their region using tools such as the Local Data Bank (BDL).
  • Statistical Olympiad: the Statistical Office in Szczecin actively supports the organization and promotion of the nationwide Statistical Olympiad, assisting students and teachers in the West Pomeranian region.
  • Games and competitions: use of riddles, quizzes, and educational materials.

4. Students and Academic Community
Cooperation with universities and other higher education institutions is highly specialized.

  • Open lectures and seminars: presentation of advanced statistical tools, research methodologies, and systems such as the Local Data Bank (BDL), STRATEG, the Geostatistical Portal, and experimental data.
  • Support for thesis seminars: helping students access unique data needed for bachelor’s and master’s theses.

5. Adults and Seniors

  • Universities of the Third Age: workshops presenting basic statistical information (e.g., demographic data on population aging or topics tailored to participants’ needs).
  • Popular topics include safe sharing of information with interviewers and using digital resources of official statistics.

6. Public Administration, Local Government, and Entrepreneurs

  • Meetings on interpreting regional data to support local planning and decision-making.
  • Presentations of databases such as the Local Data Bank (BDL), STRATEG, the Geostatistical Portal, dashboards, and experimental data.

The Statistical Office in Szczecin emphasizes modern and visually engaging formats:

Statistical education offered by the Statistical Office in Szczecin is completely free of charge. Participants may receive personalized certificates of attendance.
